This section clarifies the official steps required to deal with death cases and the procedures and facilitations available in Umm Al-Quwain to guarantee the quickness and easiness in dealing with such cases.
Receiving the body in case of natural death:
If the death happened in the hospital, the management of the hospital issues a report of the cause of death.
Requirements for residents:
- An accredited identification document for the deceases, such as a passport, ID card or a civil status record.
- An accredited identification document that defines the identity of the body receiver (a relative).
- A signed acknowledgment by the receiving relative that he/she is the closest guardian of the deceased inside the UAE in case the receiver is not a first-degree relative.
- “No objection” letter from the embassy of the deceased’s country stating that there is no objection to bury the body in the Emirate in Um Al-Quwain in case there are no relatives.
- “Facilitation of body transfer task” letter issued by Umm Al-Quwain Police Department and addressing the General Directorate of Police of the other emirate to permit the burial in the other emirate.
Requirements to transfer the body outside the state for comers:
- The valid passport of the deceased to issue the death certificate.
- “Travel permit” letter from the embassy of the deceased’s country certifying that the deceased is a in case of an expired passport or “identification document” in case of passport loss.
- An accredited identification document defining the identity of the body receiver (a relative or the person concerned).
- “No objection” letter from the embassy of the citizen and the country to which the body will be transferred.
- A letter from the transferring air company clarifying the flight details (number, date and time of flight).
- “Body transfer facilitation” letter issued by Umm Al-Quwain Police Department and addressing the General Directorate of Police of the other emirate to facilitate the procedures of transferring the body in case of transfer from another emirate.
Receiving the body in case of death under police investigation:
In this case, the body examination is referred to the police to examine it by specialized police doctors. After examining the body, the competent authority specifies the cause of death. The applicant should go to a police center in Umm Al-Quwain to obtain a no objection certificate to receive the body and deliver it to the morgue.
Requirements for residents:
- An identification document for the deceased, such as a passport or a civil status record.
- An identification document defining the identity of the body receiver (a relative).

Death certificate for residents:
- In case of burying the deceased in a state grave, the death certificate will be issued after burial. In case the body is transferred outside the state, the death certificate should be requested for issuance first to complete the procedures of body transfer.
- An official death certificate should be issued from the Ministry of Health of Umm Al-Quwain and certified by the Ministry of Exterior and the deceased’s embassy.
- The death certificate is issued only once; a replacement, additional photocopies or true copies can be issued at request.
Updating the legal status of residents:
- All the deceased’s personal documents should be canceled or modified including:
- Canceling the passport and deletion from the civil status at the General Directorate for Residency and Foreigners’ Affairs.
For residents:
- Canceling the residency permit at the General Directorate for Residency and Foreigners’ Affairs.
- Canceling the passport at the deceased’s embassy.
Burial procedures:
In case of burying the deceased in Umm Al-Quwain grave, the funeral department, belonging to the General Authority for Islamic Affairs and Endowment, in the emirate can be contacted.
